Will Marketing be taken over by AI?

The world of marketing is currently undergoing a lot of change. The big question we are faced with is "Will Marketing be taken over by AI?". Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming present in every industry, if it's not present already. In this week's article, we'll cover what AI marketing is, how it is used and questions which you should be asking.

What is AI marketing?
To break it down; Artificial intelligence is using sophisticated technologies to perform tasks which would typically require a human to do. AI marketing is applying these systems and technologies to the world of marketing. This might be to increase content creation, minimise the time it takes to analyse customer insights or even respond to messages automatically.

How is AI marketing used?
AI is changing how we work, how we design and how we communicate with our customers - and it's at our fingertips. AI marketing is used in search engines (like Google), Website Design, Ad targeting, Chatbots and much, much more.

Will marketing jobs be automated?
We believe the answer to this is "Some, not all". It depends on the marketing role. In their article
'10 Jobs Artificial Intelligence Will Replace', HubSpot produced an employment study around marketing and other industries.

They believe that things are looking bad for telemarketers; with a 99% chance that their role will become automated. Following a similar destiny, Market Research analysts should be concerned. With analysts playing an important role, automated AI and surveys are becoming more sophisticated to compile this information. Lastly, those working in advertising have a 54% likelihood of their jobs becoming automated.

Is your marketing team using artificial intelligence?
If you are a business owner reading this or work in marketing yourself, you should be asking: is your marketing function using artificial intelligence? As marketeers, we have a variety of powerful marketing tools at our disposal and we use these tools every day without even thinking about their AI capabilities. Artificial intelligence enables us to collect valuable data and analyse this information so that we can get to know our customers and ultimately achieve our business goals.

The human touch
There is no doubt that AI is beneficial. However, marketing requires creativity and flair, with a central goal to improve ways in which to communicate with clients. One thing AI cannot provide is that human touch. How often do you have to engage with a chatbot before you can speak to a company representative? Then you know, their capabilities are limited.

“AI will be the best or worst thing ever for humanity.” - Elon Musk, 2017.

Embrace, don't fear.
It is fair to say that the topic of AI may be seen as scary and uncertain to many individuals, not just in the marketing world but in many professions. Artificial intelligence is inevitable for marketing teams but in most cases should be viewed as an opportunity, rather than a threat. Will marketing be taken over by AI? Artificial intelligence will enable us to do more of what we do best by maximising our efficiency and productivity, however we do not believe that anything will completely replicate the creativity of the human brain.
